This website shows an active lesson plan for 7th grade students that integrates health and media literacy. The content area covered in this lesson plan is a combination between Visual Arts and Health. The health topic that is covered in this lesson plan is teaching about having a positive body image and a healthy self-esteem. The "ideal body image" is depicted in many ways through media. This can often have a negative reaction on young students. The goal is to get the students to understand that what we see in media advertising isn't always what is "real". The Visual Arts topic we will be covering is based off of a students evaluation of a piece of media and also their creation of their own piece of media.

Students will meet this Visual Arts Competency Goal by learning to understand how to recognize media messages. They will then used mixed medias to create a product reflecting body image. The students should also be comparing the techniques in the creation of the Photoshop edited pictures provided in this lesson.
